October 18, 2002 Lecture by Master Wan on bedside QiGong.
We are going to learn bedside Qigong today. " Have the sick person sit in front, with the head facing the sun, depending on the time of day - just imagine where the sun is, even if the day is cloudy. The therapist stands behind, and starts by placing the hand over the Bai Hui point, in a very relaxed position, so that the Qi can flow freely. We need to stand in a TaiQi position, very smooth.
" Breathing comes from the lower Dan Tien and exhale the Qi out through the arm through the LaoGun into the patient. The other hand is held towards the sky, to funnel the Qi through the LaoGun into the arm through the heart, so that the Qi will flow through naturally. It is also possible to do the treatment with both hands, taking the Qi in through the Bai Hui, which must also be relaxed. We smooth the Qi down smoothly.
" It is very important to concentrate on the point of symptoms. If headache on the right, and the stomach, then place the hands over the areas of concern for 10 minutes, then slowly smooth the Qi down the rest of the body.
" The mind is the most important. There is a connection between human beings. We must treat the patients as though we are treating our own family, and this is how the Qi will be delivered most quickly. The healer must not think about his own problems, we must be calm and peaceful.
One year Master Wong was practicing QiGong on a mountain, in a very remote area. After 3 hours of practicing QiGong he heard some noise. When he opened his eyes, he was tense and afraid. He saw a snake with its mouth open, tongue flickering right in front of him. This was the kind of snake which spit venom. The venom is actually used to treat some neurologic conditions. He said he had to relax, and not even think about getting a stone to kill the snake, because the snake is faster and can predict what he was going to do. He had to move very slowly, and make a connection with the snake. He told the snake he was there to practice QiGong, not to hurt it, and he thanked it for helping him to learn. He told the snake that he was its friend. The snake could comprehend. Since he could not run, he simply stayed there and meditated very calmly in front of the snake. When he opened his eyes, he was shocked to see there were 3 other snakes - the whole family came. This was not the time to panic. They were slithering around him, and he had to stay very calm. As the sun set, the snakes left, one by one, and Master Wan was left alone. After that experience, he felt that his QiGong meditation was especially strong. He felt his training was accelerated after that experience. He decided to go back with his binoculars and see whether the snakes were there. In his mind, he was saying thank you for helping with my training. From 5:00 am to 3:00 pm no snake. At 4:00 pm a whole bunch of monkeys showed up, 8 to start, later on 16. They seemed angry. He actually had brought some food for the snakes, but the monkeys took it without apology or problem. Even after they were finished eating they did not leave, but continued to watch him practice QiGong. In his mind, he was always telling them they were his friends, he was there to practice QiGong, and not to hurt them.
All this story is to say that the mental projection is extremely important. All the monks and Daoist priests never get bitten or hurt by the animals, because they have the kind mental projections. Those who hunt the animals tend to get hurt. It is possible to combine (or incorporate, or use?) the Qi of the animals, to increase the power of our own QiGong.
When we are the healer, we not only need to treat the patients like our family, but also think good and peaceful thoughts, so as to transmit these to our patients. Another example:
" Have the patient face the sun. Also make sure that we are facing a direction that we feel comfortable facing.
" Concentrate the Qi. He is treating this one for stomach and back pain. He starts by using the power of the high mountain and the ocean to transmit the Qi. Then the spreads the Qi smoothly down the channels twice.
" Once we are finished with the QiGong treatment, we do body work. Another example:
" Concentrate on the Bai Hui, open the channels. Smooth and open the channels in the shoulders and neck. Then some body work, neck and arms, smoothing the areas which are problematic, and take the extremity through range of motion.
" Patients who are very ill need to be treated lying down. Because the illness is serious, the Qi must be supported in 3 areas, first the upper Dan Tien, after that the middle and then the lower Dan Tien. The middle and lower can be done together, channeling the qi through the Bai Hui. It is extremely important to support the Qi before doing anything.
" Once the Qi has been supported, then we can work on the areas of complaint - e.g. Liver, Stomach.
" After the treatment, smooth the Qi, open the channels, do some body work again. Turn the patient over, stimulate the Qi on the back in the HuaToJiaJi and the inner bladder line points.
Then four students became patients, and chose 4 of our group to be healers. Healers need to concentrate and try to make the connection with their patients, and think or project very good thoughts. Once we find out where the problem is, we can move to those areas.
The students then reported what they felt. We were told to use whichever hand felt most comfortable. When we get to the next level, we can use both hands.
When we do the Qi work, we can actually feel where the obstructions are. He declined to say how, just said we could feel it. He also said that QiGong is very forgiving, we would not get negative results or harm our own Qi, as long as we follow the principles. It doesn't matter whether the patients are young or old, we should try it on them.
The mental projection goes through the acupuncture points along the channels. In the first minute, concentrate the Qi and open the channels. It takes 3 minutes from the mental projection for the Qi to penetrate the skin into the organ system. When we do a treatment, it must be at least 5 minutes long because it takes the Qi that long to penetrate to the organ. After that, we can start the treatment. If they have a stomach problem, go to the stomach and support that organ.
If we feel ill, we can do QiGong on ourselves. The Qi comes through the upraised hand, and the other hand covers the affected organ - e.g. heart. For the immune system, it is necessary to practice QiGong, all the exercises we have learned while we were here. Make sure we turn off the cell phones and remove distractions before practicing QiGong.
The students can tell us that our mental projection is strong, because they are QiGong healers themselves. Our patients may not be able to tell us the same thing. Master Wan was observing while we were treating, first he could see the Qi coming from the LaoGun point, second how sincere was the mental projection of the healer. After all these years, he can tell whether the healer is sincere or not. It is the Qi connection which takes many years to feel. This is like a third eye, which takes years to develop.
