The Australian Medical Acupuncture College is proud to host the XI ICMART World Medical Acupuncture Congress at the Shangri-La Hotel, The Rocks, Sydney.

During the Concurrent Sessions there will be small-group seminars on specific topics such as tongue diagnosis, shoulder pain, neck pain and back pain. These are yet to be finalised.
A special meeting will be convened for educators so that Colleges and Societies from across the world can exchange ideas. This meeting will be 2-3 hours duration and will be chaired by the ICMART education chairperson.
Updates will be posted on the ICMART and AMAC websites, as above. The full congress program will be available on registration at the venue.
For Australian doctors, QA&CPD points will apply to most sessions.

Dr Steven K. H. Aung, from Canada is Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Medicine & Family Practice, University of Alberta; Associate Clinical Professor, Division of Surgical Sciences, New York University College of Dentistry; in Private Practice, Edmonton, Alberta; and President of Canadian Medical Acupuncture Society.

Dr Francois Beyens, founding member and General Secretary of ICMART. Founding member of the Belgian Association of Medical Acupuncturists and successively its Vice-President and President. Lived and studied Chinese and acupuncture with several masters, for three years in Hong Kong and Taiwan. He has conducted seminars in many countries and has personally trained many medical acupuncturists. Practises acupuncture in Brussels. He has translated into French the book of Chen Ji-Rui: Acupuncture case histories and has just finished a book: Acupuncturally Yours. Fluent in French, English, Spanish and Chinese.

Dr Michael Butler, from Auckland New Zealand is a Specialist Rheumatologist; Clinical Director of the Department of Rheumatology, Auckland Hospital Board; and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Auckland. He received his acupuncture training in China. Current Research and Particular Clinical Interests: pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of chronic musculoskeletal pain and atypical pain syndromes acute and chronic.

Professor Zang-Hee Cho, Department of Radiological Sciences and Psychiatry & Human Behavior, University of California, Irvine, U.S.A. has been involved in the development of the first CT scanner and later the 3-D image reconstruction in CT scanning. He helped develop the P.E.T scanner and has worked on M.R.I. since the late 1970s developing numerous high-speed imaging techniques and methods essential for today's fMRI. More recently, as an application of functional brain imaging, Dr. Cho pioneered Acupuncture – fMRI, a new approach to Oriental medicine by utilizing the latest imaging techniques, such as functional MRI. This study, for the first time, demonstrated that there is a correlation between acupuncture stimulation and activation of the corresponding brain cortex and opened a new research avenue for the millennia old mystery of acupuncture. He is a member of the National Advisory Council for the U.S. N.I.H. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Dr Jacqueline Filshie, from the U.K. is a consultant anaesthetist at the Royal Marsden NHS Trust; Past President of ICMART; Past President of the British Medical Acupuncture Society; joint editor of the essential medical acupuncture textbook, "Medical Acupuncture: A Western Scientific Approach & Acupuncture in Medicine"; and one of the best ambassadors for medical acupuncture internationally. Her input is sought by the NHS, the General Medical Council, the WHO and many medical acupuncture organisations internationally.

Professor Ji-sheng Han, from The People's Republic of China is Professor of Neurophysiology at the Beijing Medical University and Head of the Neuroscience Research Institute. He has elucidated many of the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the effects of acupuncture. His ground breaking research over the last three decades has put acupuncture on a firm scientific foundation.

Professor Thomas Lundeberg is Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology at Sweden's Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. His research contributions to the physiological mechanisms of acupuncture from different modes of sensory stimulation have been outstanding. Prof. Lundeberg is responsible for running the Complementary Therapies Clinic at Karolinska Hospital.

CALL FOR PAPERS & POSTERS Call for research papers, clinical papers and poster presentations. Abstracts will be received only by e-mail. Submission deadline is 1 June 2004. Notification of acceptance or refusal of the paper will be sent no later than 16 August 2004 by e-mail to the presenting author.
The abstract is to be no longer than one page A4 printed in Microsoft Word .rtf format (rich text format), Times New Roman size 10 font, and left justified alignment with 3 cm margins. The title of the paper must be in bold capital letters followed by the name of the presenting author.
