Feng Shui Lectures by Dr. Zhi
First, he talked about the development of language and literature. He told a long creation story which I did not record, resulting somehow in the translation of the anterior heaven graph by the peasant who became a scholar, Fu Xi. The graph then somehow resulted in the posterior heaven graph, interpreted by King Jong Wen Wa. This somehow led to the development of the I Ching Ba Gua. He really did not explain how any of these graphs developed, although we did have examples written out.
Then he talked about the development of language, and how the characters in Chinese were originally pictograms. Then he talked about the relationship of the Earth to the Heavens.
- · In China (earth), West is higher than the East.
- · In Heaven, West is lower than East.
- · Heaven and Earth meet in the West.
Before noon, do QiGong training facing East. After noon, do it facing West. Have the head of the bed face the East, because the Sun hits the top of the head first, at the Bai Hui point, giving Yang Qi to the body. If the head of the bed faces the East, the energy of the Sun will flush out the bad Qi. Then he talked about history. The Ba Gua and The Gan Zhi somehow represent history, but I am not clear exactly how. He showed us his tools - a round metal disc with a compass at the center; a special tape measure, for measuring the thickness of doors as well as height and width. The proportions of things in buildings are important. According to ancient history, every person has his own star. The Feng Shui compass is based on the stars. What we know as the Big Dipper the Chinese call the "Mother of 10,000 Stars". The stars of the constellation are named Heaven, Clay (Earth), Fire, Water, Earth (element), Wood and Metal. The number 2 star faces East in the spring, South in the summer, West in the Fall and north in the winter, which explains one of the correspondences we learned in acupuncture class. It is appropriate to plant in the Spring, cultivate in the Summer, harvest in the Fall and lie fallow in Winter. There are people who are trained to read the stars of the constellation. Only those who have studied them for a long time are capable of reading them.
- · Heaven - if strong light, good rulers on Earth
- · Earth - if strong light, good harvest, if weak light, expect catastrophes
- · Fire - if very bright, war is happening
- · Water - if flickering, expect a water catastrophe
- · Earth - if abnormal, expect illness, because humans are made of earth
- · Wood - if abnormal, expect that the vegetation will suffer
- · Metal - represents armor, if the star is abnormal, expect war.
How do we know which star is ours? It is best if we find it ourselves. There is, however, a Daoist temple somewhere which has 64 statues, corresponding somehow to different stars. People 64 years apart share the same star. How does he know if a place has good or bad Feng Shui? If good, he sees purple, and feels good, calm and collected. If bad, he sees black, and his hair stands up. 3 groups of people can analyze Feng Shui:
- · Priest (an officially designated intuitive)
- · Extraordinary teacher (like Master Wan)
- · Oracle
There are 2 ways of correcting a room with bad Feng Shui:
- · Rearrange the furniture
- · Banish spirits which may be disturbing. These could also be in the form of rats or snakes.
How does Feng Shui relate to our personalities?
- · What happens is pre-determined.
- · Our destiny is written in our hands, faces and bodies.
- · What we are affects at least 3 generations down the line. This can, however, be changed by doing good works.
What is the Dao? The character is made of two ideograms, for "walk" and for "face". The Dao is something you cannot hear, feel or smell. If you think you know, you know nothing. The Dao is the law of the Universe, the Way, the one becoming the two and becoming the three:
Heaven Heaven and Earth Heaven and Earth and Humankind "The white horse is not a horse", because if the white horse is a horse, does that mean that the red horse and the black horse are not horses? Anyone who can define the Dao is not a good Daoist. Two friends are looking into a pond. One asks the other, "Do you know if the fish are happy?" The other responds: "Since you don't know me well enough to know without asking, how do you know whether I know the fish are happy?" "To study we have to practice, and to practice we have to study."
