Purpose and Objective By popular demand, we are pleased to announce that the workshop, A Simple Approach to TCM Point Selection, will be presented this fall by Dr. Michael Arnold. This 2-day workshop will combine lecture with case presentations to examine the basic principles of point selection from the TCM point of view.  To assure a high quality learning experience, attendance is limited to 40 participants.

Purpose and Objectives:

The acupuncture tradition encompasses a vast variety of approaches and a veritable ocean of theories. The practitioner may often feel overwhelmed by both the complexity of the patient's diagnosis and the wide variety of treatment options possible in any given situation.

This workshop is designed to clarify and simplify the acupuncture point selection process.  Beginning with a discussion of the basic principles of point selection from the TCM point of view, Dr. Arnold will discuss some of the most common TCM syndromes and the straight-forward point formulas which treat them.  Finally, the issue of how to keep the point formula simple in the face of complex clinical situations and multiple TCM diagnoses will be addressed.

The objective of this workshop is to make the acupuncture treatment a more simple, relaxing and enjoyable experience for both the physician and the patient.  Deep treatments using many needles and lots of electricity are not appropriate for all patients.  During this two-day workshop, we will discuss other styles and possibilities utilized by many of the successful acupuncturists that Dr. Arnold has encountered.

For those who find Traditional Chinese Medicine overly complex and obscure, Dr. Arnold will emphasize the underlying economy and elegance of the system. The basics of Traditional Chinese Medicine are easily accessible. Using this framework, even the most difficult clinical presentations can be diagnosed and treated. It is recommended that a person have a minimum of one hundred hours of prior training in acupuncture for this workshop.

Accreditation:

The AmericanAcademy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The AmericanAcademy of Medical Acupuncture designates the Workshop for a maximum of 14 hours of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity.

The overall objectives for physicians attending this Workshop are:

  • To understand the basic principles of point selection in the Traditional Chinese Medicine framework.
  • To acquire a core, basic point formula which, with modification, can be used for a wide variety of patients.
  • To fully clarify a basic selection of the most important of the Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostic entities.
  • To understand and have an accessible record of the point selection options for treating each of these common diagnostic entities.
  • To demonstrate how to prioritize treatment, so the knowledge presented can be applied simply and easily in complex clinical situations.
