We are pleased to announce a NEW education opportunity – a two workshop series dealing with sports injuries. The first workshop in the series will address upper extremity injuries and is entitled, Functional Assessment and Contemporary Acupuncture Integrated Treatment of Common Upper Extremity Sports Injuries. The second workshop will address injuries to the lower extremities and is entitled, Functional Assessment and Contemporary Acupuncture Integrated Treatment of Common Lower Extremity Sports Injuries. This new workshop series will be presented early in 2004 by Alejandro Elorriaga Claraco, MD. Each of the 2-day workshops will combine lecture, case presentations, and exercises to explore concepts of a meaningful physical functional assessment of common sports injuries. To assure a high quality learning experience, attendance is limited to 40 participants per workshop.
Purpose and Objectives:
Sports injuries are common for a practitioner, yet the training for most physicians does not concentrate on how to assess common sports injuries. This series of workshops will provide participants with the practical functional neuro-anatomical knowledge, and manual examination techniques, necessary to perform a meaningful physical functional assessment of common sports injuries. The instructor, Dr. Alejandro Elorriaga Claraco, will present a practical method, based on current biomedical knowledge and personal experience, for the interpretation and logical application of the information obtained from the history and physical examination process into the design of a contemporary acupuncture integrated treatment of common sports injuries. Focus is placed on practical examples of functional assessment and integrated treatment design of specific regions of the body. The opportunity is provided for participants to practice specific assessment and treatment techniques through patient demonstrations and "hands-on" participation. The workshops were designed for the physician (MD or DO) who has completed a basic 200-300 hour training program, or the equivalent in basic acupuncture principles.
Accreditation:
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture designates the Workshop for a maximum of 14 hours of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity.
The overall objectives for physicians attending each of the Workshops:
- Know how to select specific therapeutic goals on a given sports injury using a functional examination approach.
- Understand the different types of pain and how to select the best treatment approach using contemporary acupuncture.
- Understand current pathophysiology and treatment approach to overuse injuries - understand the process of assessing muscle function.
- Understand the process of assessing articular function.
- Understand how to apply the above mentioned processes to specific selected regions of the body.
- Treat effectively any muscle weakness or other articular dysfunctions commonly found in acute and chronic sports injuries.
