We are pleased to announce an exciting NEW workshop, Differential Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine, presented by Dr. Michael Arnold. This 2-day workshop will combine lecture with case presentations  to examine the basic principles of point selection from the TCM point of view. To assure a high quality learning experience, attendance is limited to 40 participants.

Purpose  and Objectives:

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, accurate and specific diagnosis is the key to generating clinically effective treatments. The strength  of the TCM system is its ability to derive from a vast range of symptomatology a few simple, precise diagnoses. This workshop will teach participants how, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, to proceed from the signs and symptoms to the differential diagnosis and then to the specific diagnosis.

In our usual approach to medical learning we tend to consider one disease entity at a time; this often leaves us at sea when we try to apply what we have learned in the clinical context. This workshop will provide the opportunity to learn about the various TCM  diagnoses in a different way. By modeling the learning process on the actual sequence of steps which we use in clinic, this workshop will convey skills and information which are readily  applicable in our daily work.

The objective  of this workshop is to teach the participants how to proceed  from the clinical picture to the specific TCM diagnosis in clinic. In TCM the majority of presenting symptoms are non specific,  and they are differentiated according to the associated signs and symptoms. Our emphasis will be on interpreting the clinical  interview. Pulse and tongue diagnosis will be briefly addressed. This workshop is an advanced level of TCM training. Participants should be familiar with, or have had some initial training and understanding of basic TCM concepts.

Accreditation

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation  Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture designates the Workshop for a maximum of 14 hours of category 1 toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours  of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity.

Overall  Course Objectives:

Physicians attending this workshop will be able to

  • Better understand the basic TCM approach to evaluating a specific sign  or symptom through the lens of the Eight Principles diagnostic  approach.
  • Learn the  basic conceptual tools utilized to interpret the responses in a simple version of the classic areas of Inquiry/Questioning  including such areas as sensations of cold or heat, abnormal sweating, sensations in the chest and abdomen, etc
  • Learn a  TCM approach to interpreting a key diagnostic manifestation in women: the menstrual cycle.
  • Better evaluate the presence or absence of a specific condition suggested as a result of initial diagnosis.
  • Observe  through several clinical situations, such as low back pain, dysmenorrhea and fatigue, how the process of differential diagnosis is applied in each instance.
  • Better understand the process of proceeding from an established Western pathophysiolocial diagnosis to a TCM pattern diagnosis.
  • Have the opportunity to submit specific cases from his or her own practice  for discussion on how the process of differential diagnosis  could be applied to each specific case.
