Pre-Symposium Workshops Thursday April 11, 2008
Concurrent workshops (8 AM - 5 30PM)
Workshop I - Dr. Thomas Ots - ""Acupuncture in Psychosomatics and Psychiatry"
Dr Thomas Ots lives in Gratz, Austria and specializes in psychiatry with a special interest in psychosomatics and psychoneuroimmunology. He is editor of the German Journal of Acupuncture and Related Techniques. Dr. Ots' topic "Acupuncture in psychosomatics and psychiatry" will be an investigation into the pathophysiology of psychosomatic and psychiatric disorders integrating Western and Chinese medicine and a modernized view of Chinese medical theories. He will compare the two cultures' concepts of psyche, emotions and body; discuss the function of the limbic system and related brain structures as bridges between psyche and soma, discuss symptom pattern diagnosis in emotionally related disorders and discuss therapy with case histories using acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Qigong and other body related therapies, NADA and adjuvant psychotherapy. Dr Ots will also discuss the need for a modernized view of Chinese medical theories and a new model of stress in Western medicine.
Workshop II - Dr. Francisco Lozano: "Geriatrics and Traditional Chinese Acupuncture"
Dr. Francisco Lozano is professor of medicine at the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City and is a faculty member of the two-year residency program for physicians in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. After graduating from medical school, he trained for four years in China and three years in Japan. He has a special interest in the correlation and comparison of Western and traditional Chinese pathophysiology. His pre symposium workshop "Geriatrics and Traditional Chinese Medicine" will be an exploration of traditional Chinese theory on the pathophysiology of aging and modern research done on mechanisms of aging. He will discuss the theory and use of acupuncture and moxibustion for both prevention, treatment and slowing progression of diseases in people 35 years and older and share some of the large body of modern research on the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion to slow aging via regulatory effects on sex hormones, lipid metabolism, immune function, and improvement of clinical symptoms in the elderly.
Workshop III - Preceptors from Helms Medical Institute: "HMI Tune Up"
The Helms Medical Institute preceptors are well known to most AAMA members as faculty of the oldest ongoing medical acupuncture program for physicians in North America. HMI is renowned for the clarity and practicality of its medical acupuncture curriculum and the excellent teaching skills of its faculty. "HMI tune up" will be a day of intensive review of important acupuncture points used daily to manage many pain and functional problems presented by senior HMI preceptors.
Regions of common musculoskeletal pain will be addressed through anatomy, palpation, needling patterns and techniques of stimulation. Participants have the opportunity to solidify their clinical skills and return to practice with greater acupuncture confidence. The session will involve hands-on training in six stations of two tables each, with mattresses for treatment demonstrations. Needles will be provided for the program, and students are asked to bring their own electrical stimulators. Visual demonstrations will also be part of this program. Participation is limited to physicians with 200 hours of AAMA-approved formal training.
The number of participants will be limited to between 36-48 in order to assure a reasonable preceptor-to-student ratio.
Workshop IV - Dr. Li Chun Huang and Dr. William Huang: "Auricular Diagnosis and Treatment on the Ear Lobe (head and face)."
Dr Li Chun Huang trained as physician and anesthesiologist in China and served as chair of the National Auricular Medicine Research Subcommittee in China. She is an internationally recognized expert and author of five books in the subject of auricular medicine. Her research has emphasized diagnosis as well as treatment of a wide spectrum of health problems using ear pathomorphology. Dr Huang states that this understanding provides a powerful adjunct to our conventional history taking and diagnostic tests. Dr Huang's workshop at the pre symposium will focus on diagnosis and treatment using the earlobe, which is related to the head and face in auricular medicine. The seminar will start by teaching their discoveries about the anatomy and pathomorphology of the ear lobe. These are specific areas, grooves and lines related to longevity, memory and cognitive function, vertigo, sleep and dream disturbances, anxiety and depression, sensory disorders and tumor diagnosis. The seminar will then emphasize the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ears, eyes, nose, throat and mouth using the earlobe. This includes illnesses such as glaucoma, astigmatism, myopia, allergy, snoring, sleep apnea, tinnitus, hearing loss, otitis, TMJ and periodontal problems, facial paralysis, spasm and trigeminal neuralgia. Dr. Huang will also discuss auricular treatment of drug, alcohol and smoking addiction as well as weight loss. Dr William Huang will translate for Dr Li Chun Huang.
