The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture 16th Annual Symposium
Medical Acupuncture in the New Millennium: Integrating Science with Tradition Sponsored by American Academy of Medical Acupuncture
April 1-4, 2004 Chicago Hilton Hotel and Towers Chicago, Illinois
 |
NEED
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is pleased to present a symposium which meets the expressed need of physician acupuncturists to examine the mechanisms of acupuncture from several different perspectives and for more information on scientific studies and research findings regarding acupuncture. This meeting addresses topics suggested by practitioners and stress the different acupuncture approaches to dealing with every day practical clinical problems with an emphasis on the scientific evidence for those approaches. Physicians have expressed the desire for exposure to alternative approaches to common clinical challenges. The different disciplines of acupuncture to be reviewed include Neuro-Anatomic, Energetics, Five Element Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. We will look at the different ways of treating the same clinical problems using these different disciplines, thus giving physicians not only a choice for treatment but also the sophistication of combining two or more disciplines to strengthen the efficacy of their treatment.
The thrust of this conference is to offer a multi-tiered approach to the understanding and clinical significance of acupuncture in a physician's daily practice, and to expand the awareness and understanding of the scientific research ongoing to examine the effects of acupuncture and acupuncture efficacy. It is designed to provide physicians with information on different approaches to the treatment of common conditions seen in clinical practice so that they may tailor acupuncture treatments to the needs of their individual patients. The conference focuses on clinically relevant treatment approaches and techniques which the physician acupuncturist can put to immediate use.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The Symposium is designed for instruction and training of physicians (MDs and DOs) interested in or already practicing acupuncture. Physicians with no experience and those with extensive background in medical acupuncture will find the program useful to their medical practices.
Physicians wishing to learn practical and effective ways to treat a variety of psychosomatic dysfunctions should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop "Psychosomatic Dysfunctions Based on the 5 Phases in Chinese Medicine: A Phenomenological Approach". This session will examine these dysfunctions and the specific correlations between body and mind they reflect, utilizing the basic concepts of TCM and analogous phenomenon---presented with a modern psychosomatic and clinical interpretation.
Physicians with an interest in Korean hand acupuncture theory and techniques (including non invasive techniques) should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop "Koryo Hand Therapy". This workshop will offer practical information on correspondence therapy----identifying and utilizing points on the hand anatomically corresponding to those on the body. The participants will learn how to identify the traditional channels and their points on the hand and how treatment approaches using KHT that can be an effective, efficient additional treatment option for any practitioner.
For those who wish to explore a unique model for the treatment of musculoskeletal problems should consider attending the Pre-Symposium Workshop "Contemporary Acupuncture for the Treatment of Common Musculoskeletal Problems: A Functional Integrated Model". Participants will learn to use a combination of functional neuro-anatomical knowledge and manual examination principles to perform physical functional assessment of common musculoskeletal problems and a practical method for the application of that assessment information into an integrated acupuncture treatment.
Physicians with over 200 hours of formal medical acupuncture training and more than three years experience may choose the workshops that best suit their interest.
Accreditation
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture designates the Symposium for up to 22 hours of CME in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. The Pre-Symposium Workshops have been designated for up to 7 1/2 hours of CME in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
The 2004 Symposium is dedicated to bringing you clinical diagnostic and therapeutic information critical to your important task of improving patient care.
OBJECTIVES
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP I: "Neuro-Anatomical Acupuncture and Matsumoto's Strategies: A Theoretical-Practical Approach"
Physicians attending this workshop will:
Become familiar with neuroanatomic acupuncture and the Kiiko Matsumoto style of acupuncture with a systematic, palpatory method utilized for diagnosis and identification of treatment options. Through practical demonstrations by Kiiko Matsumoto and staff, they will be introduced to the rapidity with which this style can be put to use in everyday practice. Will understand the relationship of this style and the neuroanatomic approach. They will be introduced to the array of clinically useful acupuncture treatments that physician acupuncturists may utilize in their practice with this style of acupuncture.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP II: "Practical Five Elements"
Physicians attending this workshop will:
This will be a very practical presentation of the Five Elements Technique in approaching common problems of everyday practice where physicians may build on their existing knowledge of the technique by learning practical applications. Become familiar with a variety of specific approaches to clinical situations, through case examples. Learn practice tips and advice on how to make best use of the Five Elements technique in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions seen by most practitioners. Understand the value of utilizing the Five Elements approach to assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP III: "Integrating Acupuncture and Manual Medicine: An Intersection for Energetic and Somatic Pathways"
Physicians attending this workshop will:
In this "hands on" workshop, physicians will learn the similarities, differences and synergistic aspects of the acupuncture and manual medicine healing systems. Better understand when to utilize structural versus functional intervention with certain specific medical conditions. Be able to look upon acupuncture channels as anatomical structures that can be affected either by needling or by manual therapies.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP IV: "Immunological Conditions: The Divergent Meridians and Western Correlates.
Physicians attending this workshop will:
Understand the divergent meridians and their clinical application in the treatment of auto-immune and immuno-deficient conditions. Will appreciate the implications of the divergent meridians and their similarities to lymphatic flow and function. Learn practical clinical methods and treatment strategies associated with theses meridians and how they can be integrated with other meridian systems to serve as a powerful tool in clinical practice.
GENERAL SESSIONS
Physicians attending the Symposium will be able to:
Understand how to integrate acupuncture into a contemporary medical practice. Understand the opportunities to utilize various approaches to the treatment of pain, headaches, musculoskeletal problems and common medical conditions. Learn the theoretical basis of and practical treatment techniques of acupuncture in the treatment of pain and common medical conditions. Learn how certain common medical conditions are evaluated and treated utilizing the Five Element acupuncture approach. Learn the findings of recent research on the effects and efficacy of acupuncture. Better understand the concepts of classical Chinese theories in the use of acupuncture in treatment approaches in a modern clinical setting. Learn how conditions commonly found in clinical practice can be treated using any one of several acupuncture approaches, or in combination, thus enhancing overall treatment results.
