Pre-Symposium Workshops
Thursday, April 24, 2003 Chair: Tapan K. Chaudhuri, MD, DABMA, FAAMA
7:30 am-5:00 pm Registration 10:00-10:15 am Refreshment Break noon-1:30 pm Lunch on Your Own 3:30-3:45 pm Refreshment Break
8:00 am - 5:30 pm Pre-Symposium Workshop I - Introduction to Medical Acupuncture This workshop is designed for physicians with little or no prior exposure to medical acupuncture and will help participants benefit from the remainder of the Symposium and obtain a clearer view of the role acupuncture may play in the care of their patients. Two approaches to medical acupuncture will be presented.
Morning: "An Introduction to Medical Acupuncture: An Eclectic Approach" Presented by Dr. Ravinder Mamtani. The use and growth of acupuncture are widespread in the US. While many health care professionals support the use of acupuncture, there are others who remain quite skeptical about its efficacy and usefulness. This introductory seminar will provide an overview of acupuncture and its application in treating various disorders. The seminar will approach the subject in a scientific way while preserving the founding theories of acupuncture. Integrating acupuncture in a conventional health care setting will also be discussed. Afternoon: "Introduction and Integration of Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Approach into Medical Practice" Dr Angelica Fargas-Babjak will provide a review and application of current knowledge in neurophysiology and neuro-modulation achieved by integration of electro-acupuncture into the management of musculoskeletal pain, dysfunction and common states of functional disregulation.
This introductory session will help participants benefit from the remainder of the Symposium and obtain a clearer view of the role acupuncture may play in the care of their patients.
8:00 am - 5:30 pm Pre-Symposium Workshop II - Psychosomatic Dysfunctions Based on the 5 Phases in Chinese Medicine: A Phenomenological Approach - Walburg Maric-Ochler, MD
Dr. Walburg Maric-Ochler will lead this workshop that will describe the specific correlations and dysfunctions between body and mind that physicians encounter in their everyday practice. The presentation will be based on the classic concepts of Chinese medicine, philosophy and religion, centred on the 5 phases system with its analogous phenomenons, but presented with a modern psychosomatic and clinical interpretation.
8:00 am - 5:30 pm Pre-Symposium Workshop III - Koryo Hand Therapy - Lowell E. Kobrin, MD, PhD
In the morning, Dr. Kobrin will cover Correspondence Therapy - the most fundamental level to begin using Korean Hand Therapy (KHT) for relief of pain. This introduction will give the practitioner the basic practical information needed to map the places on the hand anatomically corresponding to those on the body. Since any painful area on the body can be precisely located on the corresponding hand location (Ah Shi points), this knowledge allows one to effectively treat uncomplicated pain using the various methods available for stimulating the KHT system.
In the afternoon session, Dr. Kobrin will cover Micro-meridian Therapy. As a pre-requisite, participants should have a working knowledge of Correspondence Theory, a comfortable knowledge of the body meridians and points, and skill in one or more of the systems used to diagnose and formulate an acupuncture treatment, e.g., French Energetics, Eight Principles, Zang/Fu Theory, Five Phase Theory, etc. The practitioner will learn how to locate the fourteen traditional channels and their points on the hand. The KHT micro-meridian system is unique in that it provides a complete template of the traditional meridian system of the body, but the treatments are very delicate, efficient, rapid, safe and highly effective (with either invasive or non-invasive methods of point stimulation). Any theory of acupuncture can be applied to the KHT micro-system with the same results as using the traditional body points.
8:00 am - 5:30 pm Pre-Symposium Workshop IV - "Contemporary Acupuncture for the Treatment of Common Musculoskeletal Problems: A Functional Integrated Model" - Alejandro Elorriaga-Clarico, MD
In this workshop session, Dr. Elorriaga-Clarico will provide an overview of the practical functional neuro-anatomical knowledge and manual examination principles necessary to perform a meaningful physical functional assessment of common musculoskeletal problems. He will present a practical method for the application of the information obtained from the examination process into an integrated acupuncture treatment. He will provide practical examples of functional assessment and integrated treatment design of specific upper and lower body regions using course participants.

PLENARY SESSION
FRIDAY, April 25, 2003
7:00 am - 5:30 pm Registration 7:15 am - 7:45 am Continental Breakfast
7:45 am - 8:00 am Introductions- "Medical Acupuncture in the 21st Century: Balancing the Art and Science of Healing"
8:00 am - 9:30 am "Physiology of Pain Control in Acupuncture" - Professor Walter Zieglgansberger
Chronic pain syndromes are characterized by altered neuronal excitability in the pain matrix. The ability to rapidly acquire and store memory of aversive events is one of the basic principles of central nervous systems throughout the animal kingdom. These neuro-plastic changes take place in e.g. spinal cord, thalamic nuclei and cortical and sub-cortical (limbic) areas integrating pain threshold, intensity and affective components. Neurons conveying nociceptive information are controlled by various sets of inhibitory inter-neurons. The discharge activity of these inter-neurons counteracts long-term changes in the pain matrix following nociceptor activation, i.e. prevents the transition of acute pain signaling to chronic pain states. The most recent research suggests that pain states may be sensitive to novel families of agents and therapeutic measures not predicted by traditional preclinical pain models as well as human pain states.
9:30 am - 10:30 am "Chronic Pain as a Disease: An Update on the Latest Research and What it Means to Physician Acupuncturists"- Stephen Taylor, DO
Dr. Taylor will describe the latest research on the pathophysiology of chronic pain. This research indicates that, in chronic pain patients, the immune, nervous, and endocrine systems of the body can act in unison to actively generate pain, even when there is no tissue injury. For the Medical Acupuncturist, this information can improve the treatment approach and create realistic expectations of the outcome of treatment.
10:30 am-11:00 am Refreshment break with exhibitors

Using a rapid assessment technique and dividing chronic pain into it's neurological, musculoskeletal, and psychosocial aspects participants will learn how to effectively manage these challenging patients. Using the latest research, Dr. Taylor will describe his unique approach to evaluating and treating patients with chronic pain. There will be a demonstration of several PENS montages and a review of problem cases.
WORKSHOP B - "Acupuncture and Pain Control: Clinical and Research Perspectives" - Professor Walter Zieglgansberger
Chronic inflammation or injury of peripheral nerves evokes the reorganization of cortical sensory maps. These recent advances in electrophysiological, molecular and cellular biological techniques have profoundly changed the face of pain research. The multitude of dynamic changes which occur during chronic pain states may also offer explanations for some of the effects observed following acupuncture and treatment with related techniques.
WORKSHOP C - "Five Element Acupuncture in Depression and Stress" - Charles Moss, MD, DABMA
The Five Element system provides a means of identifying the underlying energetic imbalance that leads to depression and determines how stress affects the person. This workshop will provide a means to identify these imbalances and introduce treatment approaches for stress and depression.
WORKSHOP D - "Advanced Auricular Acupuncture: Treating Painful Conditions" - Bryan L. Frank, MD, DABMA, FAAMA
Many painful conditions will respond well to advanced concepts of Auricular Therapy that enhance clinical response of difficult pain conditions beyond the basic approaches. This workshop will address using auricular acupuncture as a compliment to body acupuncture as well as a stand-alone system with techniques that are far beyond simple recipe methods. Concepts including phases, frequencies, and blockages to healing will be discussed. This workshop is intended for those with previous auricular training and auricular clinical experience.

WORKSHOP A - "Contemporary Medical Acupuncture and the Neuromodulation Paradigm: Practical Implications" - Alejandro Elorriaga-Claraco, MD
The focus of this session is on the discussion of the most relevant practical aspects of using a contemporary acupuncture paradigm. Specifically on the selection of therapeutic goals, integration of acupuncture with other interventions, the selection of outcome measures, and the reporting of treatments and treatment progress. Examples will be provided to illustrate every aspect.
WORKSHOP B - "Acupuncture and Addiction: Clinical and Research Perspectives" - Professor Walter Zieglgansberger
Drugs of abuse probably induce their rewarding effects by affecting a common brain reward circuit. The introduction of the concepts of neuronal plasticity mediated via the activation of L-glutamate receptors or GABA- and dopamine receptors in addiction research has already led to important therapeutic consequences. Numerous animal and human studies suggest a close relationship between stress and voluntary alcohol intake. The corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) system, which mediates endocrine and behavioral responses to stress, plays a crucial role in the control of alcohol drinking behavior. Alterations in this gene may constitute a genetic risk factor for stress-induced alcohol drinking.
WORKSHOP C - "Sexual Dysfunction from a 5 Element Perspective" - Charles Moss, MD
Sexual dysfunction often is secondary to energetic imbalances in the Fire, Wood or Water elements. This session will explore the body, mind and spirit components of these elements and identify which points can be useful in treatment.
WORKSHOP D - "Advanced Energetics: Triangulation Equilibration" - Joseph Helms, MD
Energetic equilibration is the goal of every acupuncture treatment, whether treating musculoskeletal or functional problems. In this workshop Dr. Helms assembles a practical collection of needle patterns that can be used as exclusive or adjunct treatment in realistic daily practice. The session is directed at the experienced practitioner.
