Pre-Symposium Workshop I - Introduction to Medical Acupuncture
This workshop is designed for physicians with little or no prior
exposure to medical acupuncture and will help participants benefit
from the remainder of the Symposium and obtain a clearer view
of the role acupuncture may play in the care of their patients.
Morning:
"The Energetics Approach" Joseph Helms, MD, will present
a general survey of the important anatomical, pathophysiological,
and therapeutic models that form the foundations of medical
acupuncture with an emphasis on the Energetics approach, widely
used by Western trained physicians.
Afternoon:
"The Approach According to Chinese Medicine". Dr Anita
Cignolini teaches Chinese acupuncture at a higher level than
the basic TCM offered in China to foreign students with the
stress on internal medicine rather than on external diseases
and pain treatment. This level of theoretical and clinical teaching
corresponds to the syllabus taught in medical schools in Imperial
China and covers all branches of medical knowledge.
This
introductory session will help participants benefit from the
remainder of the Symposium and obtain a clearer view of the
role acupuncture may play in the care of their patients.
8:00
am - 5:30 pm
Pre-Symposium Workshop II - Introduction to Yamamoto New Scalp
Acupuncture
Dr.
Toshikatsu Yamamoto, will present the theory and principles
of the "Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture" including
the YNSA basic and ypsilon points. YNSA has been widely used,
especially in Europe, to treat a variety of ailments including
paralysis and pain. Dr. Yamamoto will demonstrate the application
of YSNA techniques to treat various conditions through the treatment
and analysis of actual clinical situations through patient and
case presentations. He will explain how the "Yamamoto New
Scalp Acupuncture" techniques can be applied in clinical
situations and be integrated with traditional Western medical
practices. Attendance will be limited.
8:00
am - 5:30 pm
Pre-Symposium Workshop III - Neuro-Anatomic Acupuncture for
Neurological Disorders
Dr.
Joseph Wong will review the acupuncture meridians in the head
and face. Discussion will be carried out about the neuro-anatomical
approach for neurological disorders, such as stroke, Parkinson's
disease, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. Acupuncture
management of head pain (migraine, cluster headache, neurologic
headache, tension headache, etc.) will be presented. The cranial
nerves and acupuncture for their dysfunction will also be included.
8:00
am - 5:30 pm Pre-Symposium Workshop IV - TCM - Diagnosis, Integration
with Bio-Medical Science and Clinical Applications
Dr.
Francisco Lozano will review the basics of TCM Syndrome differentiation
and its importance in modern clinical practice. He will explain
some of the most frequent Syndromes encountered in daily practice
and their correlation to western pathologies. The integration
of TCM basic concepts and Syndromes into a contemporary biological
model will also be discussed. Dr. Lozano will present a survey
on the therapeutic biological effect of some acupuncture points
and Chinese herbs from current scientific research and their
clinical application through TCM and Western Medicine perspectives.

Pain" - John Giusto, MD
Dr.
Giusto will discuss how to get the most out of meridian treatments
for upper back and neck pain by reviewing the different levels
of the acupuncture circulation network, their specific indications
and applications (including additional influential points),
and by refining the various choices of local input (covering
the neuro-anatomical intricacies of point location and needle
technique for surface, mid-depth, and deep needling). He will
also stress the use of basic manual techniques and key neuromuscular
re-education exercises to obtain a kinesthetic understanding
of the biomechanical and neurological patterning of the pain
and dysfunction, and to enable long lasting results.
WORKSHOP

Allergies, Fribromyalgia, Shi-Type, Rheumatoid Arthritis"
- Anita Cignolini, MD
In
these afternoon workshops Dr. Cignolini will explain how immunity
and immune diseases are understood in Chinese Medicine as internal
and external defenses and their failure. The immune responses
are classified as Shi and Xu types. The Shi-excessive or hyper-ergic
responses cause diseases of the excessive type; whereas the
Xu-deficient or hypo-ergic responses cause diseases of the Xu
or consumptive type. Diagnostic criteria will be part of the
generic descriptions of each type and will allow participants
to include the treatment of these diseases in their daily practice.
Some of the most representative diseases are described in detail,
including basic treatments.

session in which she reviews the Shi-excessive or hyper-ergic
responses which cause diseases of the excessive type, and the
Xu-deficient or hypo-ergic which cause diseases of the Xu or

PLENARY
SESSION
8:00
am - 9:30 am "Molecular and Neurochemical Basis of Pain-Implications
for Medical Acupuncture" - Lynnae Schwartz, MD
The
molecular biology and neurochemistry of pain are only partially
understood to date. How any one person might perceive and respond
to pain may ultimately be determined by a matrix of events,
where each event is determined by a series of neural networks
involving multiple neurotransmitters, specialized families of
receptors, intracellular transport and assembly systems, messenger
molecules, and variable gene expression. Network activation,
as a single event, in series with, or parallel to other networks
results in the objective and subjective responses identified
as pain-related we see in our patients. Dr. Schwartz will highlight
and examine recent advances in our understanding of these molecular
and physiologic responses, especially as related to persistent
hyperalgesia. Possible implications for medical acupuncture
related analgesia and sedation will be considered.
9:30
am - 10:30 am "Sanjiao Energetics and the Organic Liquids
(Xin Ye)" - Edward S. Garbacz, MD, DABMA
An
examination of the fundamental metabolic and energetic transformative
roots of "Sanjiao Energetics", the basis for the formation
of all forms of human energy. Dr. Garbacz will present the components
of the Sanjiao, their individual and collective functioning,
their levels of organization (including in relation to the Wu
Xing, "5 Movements" and San Tai, "Three Geniuses")
and their therapeutic consequences in selected pathologic states,
using its critical component products, the organic liquids,
Xin Ye, with examples for clinical use.
