Licensed physicians who have completed an organized primary acupuncture course of at least 200 hours and have 300 or more total hours of training are eligible to make application to the American Board of Medical Acupuncture to sit for the examination. Thus, physicians may sit for the exam soon after their training, or they may wait, depending on their preference.

The other components of certification include two years of practice after the initial training program with at least 500 cases, and three professional physician references. The affidavit of experience and references may be submitted after they are completed. Applicants should not attest to completion of two years of practice until they have actually completed the time after their training.

Chapter News

Colorado
The Colorado Chapter is planning a one-day conference with Butch Levy, MD, LAc, on Japanese style of pain management called, "Itaml," in October 2001. The third Chapter meeting will follow the conference. The Chapter also is considering the invitation of Glenn Rothfeld, MD, MAc, for a two-day weekend course on Five Elements Acupuncture, tentatively in January or February 2002 in Denver. Call President Alice Brunecky, MD, (303/438-2050) if you're interested and would like to attend.
Indiana
Attention Hoosiers, there is now an Indiana Chapter of AAMA! We are just getting organized but need to know your ideas and interests. Contact President William L. Driehorst, MD, with ideas and interests (St. Vincent Center for Complementary Medicine and Pain Managment, 13431 Old Meridian St., #225, Carmel, IN 46032, wldmd@aol.com).
New Jersey
The New Jersey Chapter had a meeting of the Steering Committee recently to discuss liaison with the Delaware Valley and New York groups as well as an educational meeting on practice management in Atlantic City in late fall. Other discussions and plans centered around the NJ Chapter's Board and developments among non-physician acupuncturists in New Mexico and Florida.
Oregon
Joseph Sullivan, MD, has been selected to chair the Education Committee of the Oregon Chapter. The Annual Educational Conference will take place Sept. 29, 2001 from 9 am to noon at Providence Medical Center in Portland. The speaker is nationally renowned acupuncture researcher, Dr. Richard Hammerschlag, PhD. The topic will be "Recent Advances in Acupuncture Research: Neuroimaging, Placebo Needles and Study Designs that Reflect Traditional Practice." Attendance fee is $25, and CME credit is being sought.
To attend, contact Dr. Peter Hanfileti, secretary-treasurer of the Oregon Chapter (360/449-4500, hanfileti@pointsoforigin.com).

AAMA offers courses

AAMA is pleased to announce a Five Element Acupuncture for Physicians Workshop presented by Glenn Rothfeld, MD, MAc. This two-day workshop will combine lecture with case presentations to examine the 5 Element model of diagnosis for medical acupuncture. To assure a high-quality learning experience, attendance is limited to 40 participants.

After reviewing the last AAMA Membership Survey, the Education Committee determined that Five Elements was among the most highly desired topics to be presented in a workshop format. Five Element acupuncture is a system that combines both "left brain" and "right brain" functions into a complete system of diagnosis and treatment. The Five Elements for Physicians workshop is experiential training in which participants will get ample opportunities to use and to develop their skills during the diagnostic process.

Acupuncture training at the minimum level of 200 hours in a formal course of study is encouraged. However, the workshop can be useful for physicians without prior acupuncture training, as a means to learn the Five Element way of understanding patients and forming a therapeutic plan within that context.

AAMA, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for CME to provide CME for physicians, designates the workshop for a maximum of 13 hours of category 1 toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity.
The workshop will be 9 am to 5 pm as follows:

  • Oct. 6-7, 2001 at Hyatt Regency DFW, Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport, Dallas, TX. Call (972) 453-1234 or (800) 233-1234 for reservations. Ask for "AAMA Workshop/5 Element" room rate of $99 single/$124 double (good until Sept. 21)
  • Nov. 3-4, 2001 at Hyatt Regency O'Hare, 9300 West Bryn Mawr Ave., Rosemont, IL. Call (847) 696-1234 or (800) 233-1234 for reservations. Ask for "AAMA Workshop/5 Element" room rate of $125 single/$145 double (good until Oct. 12).

For a registration form, call AAMA offices (323/937-5514).
