DR. NGUYEN VAN NGHI'S
ACUPUNCTURE LECTURES - SEMINAR I
VIDEO TAPE REVIEW

Charles K. Brummer, M.D.

This article reviews the video-tape series of Dr. Van Nghi's first seminar (1) in the United States. Dr. Van Nghi currently residing in France, is an eminent figure in both Western medicine and acupuncture. He frequently lectures around the world. The video-taped lectures of previous UCLA Extension-AAMA acupuncture courses provide an exciting and convenient opportunity for home-based continuing education.
The tape begins with a presentation on the use of YIN-YANG, the 8 Principles and the 6 Energy levels. This is followed by an excellent description of the concepts of the transverse and longitudinal LO vessels and the LO-IUNN shunt systems.
Various techniques for treating chronic and acute pain syndromes are clearly outlined, covering the use of TING points, tendino-muscular meridians, lower HO points, and "La Grande Piqure Miu'. Specific syndromes are presented with clinical examples such as carpal tunnel syndrome and post-herpetic neuralgia.
An enlightening presentation on the Triple Heater, its energetic derivation and uses, is coupled with a discussion on the creation and transformation of energy within the body to produce the WEI (protective) and lONG (nutritive) energies. Many clinically useful pearls are to be found in this discussion such as "all deficiency problems are treated through the Triple Heater." The Curious meridians (also known as Extraordinary meridians) are covered both theoretically and clinically. Appropriate clinical examples and indications for use are included. One of the highlights of this tape series is the presentation on agitated depression. The early stage of depression, Yin depression, is clearly differentiated from the later stage of depression, or Yang depression.
The presentation is supplemented by a general overview of the psychoemotional aspects of Oriental medicine as comprehended through the principles of the 6 Phases.
The tapes conclude with a series of practical clinical situations. The section on gastrointestinal problems covers gastritis, constipation, acute and chronic diarrhea, and flatulence. The section on sinusitis addresses acute and chronic conditions as welt as those of allergic etiology.
Dr. Van Nghi's video-taped presentation is outstanding. He is able to balance a strong theoretical base with various practical clinical applications, sharing useful treatment protocols with those physicians trained in Medical Acupuncture.
