EDITORIAL

As Medical Acupuncture with its complexity and thousands of years of existence opens to the West; as Western scientific thought evolves from Newtonian to Quantum Physics, modern physicians are now able to make the quantum leap towards thinking in more than one system, and expand their ability to heal and to further improve the care of patients.
These "new" physicians, trained simultaneously in both Eastern and Western medical systems, are charged with exploring and documenting the old theories, and unravelling their obscurity with the aid of modern scientific methods and technologies.
Because of philosophical, cultural and language differences, the field of Medical Acupuncture is extremely complex. Yet, those who study and understand acupuncture in depth, discover a highly sophisticated and accurate system of medicine which interlocks perfectly with the traditional Western approach. These two systems complement each other in areas of respective deficiencies, and each may augment the efficacy of the other when they are applied together.
The time has come for physicians to share their knowledge and expertise in Medical Acupuncture, so that more physicians may be able to integrate it into their practices and a larger number of patients benefit from its use.
The AAMA, through its strong membership, embarks on this important voyage with the publication of this Review, so that future generations may become better physicians.
I invite all our members and colleagues to become active participants in this endeavor: to work, observe, question, report and research in the field of Medical Acupuncture. We can all make a difference in refining the quality of health care, as welt as safety of interventions and prevention of illness in the decades ahead.
