   19th Annual Symposium

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is pleased to present a symposium which meets the expressed need of physician acupuncturists to examine the mechanisms of acupuncture from several different perspectives and for more information on scientific studies and research findings regarding acupuncture. This meeting addresses topics suggested by practitioners and stresses the different acupuncture approaches to dealing with every day practical clinical problems with an emphasis on the scientific evidence for those approaches. Physicians have expressed the desire for exposure to alternative approaches to common clinical challenges. The different disciplines of acupuncture to be reviewed include Neuro-Anatomic, Energetics, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.  We will look at the different ways of treating the same clinical problems using these different disciplines, thus giving physicians not only a choice for treatment but also the sophistication of combining two or more disciplines to strengthen the efficacy of their treatment.

The thrust of this conference is to offer a multi-tiered approach to the understanding and clinical significance of acupuncture in a physician's daily practice, and to expand the awareness and understanding of the scientific research ongoing to examine the effects of acupuncture and acupuncture efficacy.  It is designed to provide physicians with information on different approaches to the treatment of common conditions seen in clinical practice so that they may tailor acupuncture treatments to the needs of their individual patients. The conference focuses on clinically relevant treatment approaches and techniques which the physician acupuncturist can put to immediate use.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The Symposium is designed for instruction and training of physicians (MDs and DOs) interested in or already practicing acupuncture. Physicians with no experience and those with extensive background in medical acupuncture will find the program useful to their medical practices.

The pre-symposium workshops are intended to provide a more concentrated learning experience where the faculty can spend the entire day focused on a topic in greater depth and with more time for practical examples from clinical experiences. Those physicians with an interest in achieving a better understanding of Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture (YNSA) including demonstrations of the technique in treating various disorders, should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop I: "Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture" with Dr. Tokihashu Yamamoto. Dr. Yamamoto presents his unique approach to scalp acupuncture which has been utilized extensively in the treatment of neurological disorders and injuries as well as other conditions.

A particularly useful approach to the treatment of pain for many practitioners is the Craig PENS technique.  Physicians interested in a review of the science and clinical applications utilizing this technique and its potential value in the treatment of pain should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop II: "Review of the Basics of the Craig PENS Technique" with Dr. Stephen Taylor, a long-time Craig colleague. This session is intended to be a broad review of the science and description of the basic process necessary to successfully utilize this approach.

The treatment of cancer related pain is particularly challenging and quite different from benign pain control.  Those interested in learning more regarding TCM approaches to the treatment of cancer patients including the treatment of accompanying anxiety, depression, immune system and other systemic disorders such as constipation, nausea etc. should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop III: "Acupuncture and Pain Control in Cancer Patients" with Dr. Stephen Aung.

Finally, for those intrigued with the potential benefits of a broad, holistic approach to patent care should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop IV: "Five Phases: Connection of Body, Mind and Spirit" with Dr. Klaus-Dieter Platsch. Body, mind and spirit are interconnected as evidenced by the correlations of the five emotions and the five aspects of the spirit Shen. Dr. Platsch will present case histories and therapeutic strategies to emphasize the practical value and benefit of a holistic approach.

Physicians with over 200 hours of formal medical acupuncture training and more than three years experience may choose the workshops that best suit their interest.

ACCREDITATION. The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture designates the Symposium for up to 22 hours of CME in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. The Pre-Symposium Workshops have been designated for up to 7 1/2 hours of CME in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

The 2007 Symposium is dedicated to bringing you clinical diagnostic and therapeutic information critical to your important task of improving patient care.

OBJECTIVES

Physicians attending this workshop will: Learn the theory and principles of the "Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture" including the YNSA basic and ypsilon points. Observe the application of YSNA techniques to treat various conditions through the treatment and analysis of actual clinical situations through patient and case presentations.  Understand the principles of the treatment of various conditions including stroke, pain syndromes and neurological conditions.  And will better understand how the "Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture" techniques can be applied in clinical situations and be integrated with traditional Western medical practices.

PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP II: Review of the Basics of the Craig PENS Technique
Physicians attending this workshop will: Understand the basic concepts that form the theoretical basis for Craig PENS, a pain treatment technique involving percutaneous electrical stimulation through acupuncture needles. Be aware of current theories and research in the physiology of pain and the similar mechanisms of action of PENS, TENS, and Craig PENS. Understand the basic algorithms for treating chronic pain patients with Craig PENS. Understand the techniques of patient assessment treated with Craig PENS with emphasis on improving patient outcomes.

PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP III: Acupuncture and Pain Control for Cancer Patients
Physicians attending this workshop will: Understand the approach to acute and chronic pain using  Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.  Understand the types of pain caused directly by cancer, as well as that caused by the conventional treatment approach to cancer, namely surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation and the associated manifestations of such treatments and be able to describe a holistic approach to treatment of the cancer patient utilizing classic TCM approaches.
